The Mostly Mozart Summer Music and Science Program, 2013

This was the second year of our summer program with students from the New York City public schools. In the course of the two and one half weeks of the program, students participated in what the ancient Greeks call the "quadrivium" --arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy.  Their mornings were spent building the Platonic solids;  mapping the geometric solids and our solar system's planets orbits onto a monochord;  discovering their relationship to music and the musical scales; and studying Shakespeare!  In the afternoon, they went on to learn to sing Mozart's Magic Flute -- die Zauberflote -- in German.  At the end of the summer program, these students were able to sing selections from The Magic Flute.   Not only that, there was an amazing transformationin how they thought, and were able to think.
